FFXIV: How to get a Chocobo

Get your first FFXIV mount with ease thanks to our handy guide.

Final Fantasy XIV, otherwise known as FFXIV, lets players collect mounts and steeds to ride through Eorzea. The most iconic mount in the Final Fantasy franchise, however, is the Chocobo. Though the quest for this bird unlocks as part of the FFXIV main story, grabbing this mount is optional and easy to miss. Eorzea’s most common mount is available to all players willing to do a few quests to unlock it.

Players unlock the Chocobo mount quest after progressing through the FFXIV MSQ, or Main Scenario Quest. Unlike many mounts in Final Fantasy XIV, you’ll need to complete a specific quest to obtain this creature.

The Chocobo quest: My Little Chocobo unlocks after players select their Grand Company. To select your Grand Company, you’ll have to complete The Company You Keep MSQ. Join the Immortal Flames, Maelstrom, or Twin Adder to progress. Which faction you select is inconsequential, though each Grand Company offers a unique symbol, logo, and colors.

Once you’ve allied with a Grand Company, you can select the My Little Chocobo side quest. Look for a blue quest marker like the one shown below:

Depending on who you choose, you’ll need to head to one of the following locales:

  • Immortal Flames: Swift—Ul’dah – Steps of Nald (X: 8.4, Y: 8.9)
  • Maelstrom: R’ashaht Rhiki—Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X: 13.1, Y: 12.8)
  • Twin Adder: Vorsaile Heuloix—New Gridania (X: 9.7, Y: 11.1)

Once you finish the mission from one of these NPCs, you’ll earn the Chocobo Whistle:

Head to your inventory to use this item and permanently unlock your Company Chocobo mount in Final Fantasy XIV. Head to the Mount tab in the menu to summon your Chocobo and ride it. Players can also add their mounts to the Hotbar for easy access.
