Baldur’s Gate 3 has been one of the hottest vide games of 2023, thrilling players with its gameplay, characters, and storytelling. For some people, what makes a game the most fun is playing with friends. So, is there co-op in Baldur’s Gate 3?
How to start a multiplayer campaign in Baldur’s Gate 3?
If you want to play Baldur’s Gate co-op, start at the main menu. From there, select the Multiplayer button. Then, click on Create. This will create a multiplayer lobby. In your lobby, your friends can join in several ways. One of the easiest ways is simply going to your friends list (Steam, Xbox, Playstation) and inviting people. You can also send your server ID to your friends in a private message. In this instance, they can open their own Baldur’s Gate main menu, head to their multiplayer screen, and type in your server ID. This will add them to your lobby.
As a final option, you can also set your lobby to public and have your friends find it from the list of many public lobbies. The downside here is that you have to kick out any strangers who might randomly join while you wait for friends. It’s more common than you’d expect.
Whoever started the multiplayer lobby is considered the host and the Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign data is saved to their computer. If you want/need to change hosts, you can. However, you have to transfer save data between computers which can be quite a complicated process.

What’s it like playing co-op in Baldur’s Gate 3?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can have a multiplayer campaign with 2-4 players. If you and your friends want to play Baldur’s Gate origin characters (Karlach, Astarion, etc.), you have to start the game together from the beginning. Players that join later in a campaign can only make custom characters.
Also, once players a committed to a campaign, there’s no going back. Sounds dire, yes. But the point is that once a playable character is added to your game, they can’t be removed. Your friend can’t just drop in for Act 2 and then never come back. If a party of four is added to the game, there will now be four playable characters that all need management and coordination. And if the people playing said characters do not log in to play them, the host will end up having to control all other un-manned characters.
Another thing unique to Baldur’s Gate multiplayer is that whenever a player talks to an NPC a conversation will start and pull in all players. However, only the player who started the conversation can respond to the NPCs. All the other players can do is suggest dialogue options, but the conversation-starting player makes all the decisions. So be careful. If one of your friends is known for choosing the most violent or trouble-making dialogue options, you might want to try to start conversations before they can.
