With Pokemon Scarlet and Violet out for players to enjoy, there are plenty of new Pokemon to catch and gym leaders to beat. This time players can fight Gym leaders in any order, including Katy, the Bug-type gym leader. If you’re headed here first, we’ve got a few notes to make your trip easier.

The Bug-Type Gym Test

Before you can take on Katy and her team, you’ll need to beat the Olive Roll Gym Test, but you can also take out two optional trainers. Each trainer has a different Pokemon, so be prepared for the following fighters.
Kricketune

Type | Weaknesses | Strong Against |
---|---|---|
Bug | Fire, Flying, Rock | Fighting, Grass, Ground |
As a Bug-type, Kricketune has three major weaknesses, including Fire. Because Bug-types are weak to Fire, we recommend coming to this gym first if you choose Fuecoco as your starter. It would be best if you made short work of Trainer number one using Fire-type moves, as its Bug moves won’t do much to Fuecoco or any other Fire-type. Quaxly is also a good choice for this gym battle, as it gets Wing Attack early in its evolution line, making it a great match against Bug types.
Venonat

Type | Weaknesses | Strong Against |
---|---|---|
Bug/Poison | Fire, Flying, Rock, Psychic | Bug, Fairy, Fighting, Grass, Poison |
Next up in the lineup is Venonat, a Gen I Pokemon. As a dual Bug/Poison type, Venonat has an added weakness in Psychic type moves. You shouldn’t have a tough time with this Pokemon, as it’s one of the weakest creatures in the franchise. Give it a few good hits, and you’re ready for the Gym battle!
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Katy’s Gym Team

Once you’ve beaten the Gym challenge and Katy’s underlings, you’re ready to fight her one-on-one. Katy brings three Pokemon to the battle if you challenge her first, with a surprise at the end of the fight.
Nymble (Lvl 14)

Type | Weaknesses | Strong Against |
---|---|---|
Bug | Fire, Flying, Rock | Fighting, Grass, Ground |
A new addition to the Pokedex and the first fighter for Katy is Nymble, a Bug-type fighter. Like the entries before, you can use Fire, Flying, or Rock moves to shred its health and more short work of it.
Tarountula (Lvl 14)

Type | Weaknesses | Strong Against |
---|---|---|
Bug | Fire, Flying, Rock | Fighting, Grass, Ground |
Next up is the second new entry in the Gym, Tarountula. This Bug-type fighter is also solely Bug-type, so keep up your Fire, Flying, or Rock attacks to take it down quickly.
Teddiursa—Tera Type Bug (Lvl 15)

Type Before Terastallizing
Type | Weaknesses | Strong Against |
---|---|---|
Normal | Fighting | None |
At the start of your fight with Katy, Teddiursa will have its usual weaknesses, so use any Fighting-type moves you’ve got to initiate the battle. Once you deal some damage to it, Teddiursa will change thanks to Terastallizing.
Type After Terastallizing
Type | Weaknesses | Strong Against |
---|---|---|
Bug | Fire, Flying Rock | Fighting, Grass, Ground |
While Teddiursa is usually a Normal-type fighter with a Fighting weakness, things change in this fight. Katy’s Teddiursa can use its Tera Type transformation to assume a Bug-type during the battle. This gives the Pokemon new strengths and weaknesses. If you came prepared to fight Bug-type Pokemon, you wouldn’t have much trouble here, as it assumes many of the same weaknesses as Katy’s other Pokemon.
Once you beat Katy, you’ll earn TM021: Pounce for your efforts and, of course, the Bug-type Gym Badge!
