Ultron’s First Appearances

- Ultron debuted in ‘The Avengers #55’ in 1968.
- Since his reveal, Ultron has been the central antagonist of several Avengers storylines.
Ultron Origins

Ultron’s origins differ greatly from the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU. Tony Stark did not create the all-powerful automaton. Instead, Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man, came up with the idea for a peacekeeping protocol AI.
After the initial design phase, Ultron gained sentience and intelligence and grew to hate his creator and envy his relationship with Janet Van Dyne, eventually fighting back against his programming to become autonomous.
Once he was no longer bound to Hank Pym’s directives, Ultron removed himself from Hank Pym’s memory entirely, granting time to strengthen while in hiding. Ultron finally debuted as an Avengers villain under the name Ultron-5, the fifth incarnation of the AI. Boasting an adamantium body and droves of drones at his command he still serves as one of the most problematic villains to eliminate today.

If any piece of Ultron survives or stores a backup of his AI online, he will reincarnate and return to wreak havoc upon the Avengers. While the Avengers have completely wiped out Ultron before, it’s a tall order, and more often than not, Ultron does come back, stronger than before with a new, more powerful version.
Unlike in the MCU, Ultron sent Vision as an assailant to eliminate the Avengers in the lead-up to his arrival. He was never planned as a body for the automaton to inhabit.
