The Thing’s First Appearance

- First appeared in ‘Fantastic Four #1 (1961)‘
- Appeared alongside Reed Richards, Susan Storm, and Johnny Storm to become one of the original Fantastic Four Members.
The Thing Origins

Like the rest of the Fantastic Four, Ben Grimm went into space to observe cosmic radiation above the Earth’s atmosphere. Grimm served as the pilot of their excursion into the final frontier. Here, he received his powers, ones very unlike those of his three friends.

Ben Grimm transformed from a man into the rock-covered creature we know today as The Thing. Unlike the other members of the Fantastic Four, Ben cannot shift between his human form and that of his hardened body. Ben is trapped as The Thing indefinitely (outside of a formula derived far later in the series that allows him to become human one week of the year).
One of the worst side effects of Ben Grimm’s transformation is his inability to age in rock form. This means that Benn can only age about a week each year, and will likely outlive all other members of the Fantastic Four, their children, and generations to come.
