For 2023’s Game of the Year, six candidates from various developers, studios, and teams were chosen. You can see each game nominated below and the studio behind that title.

  • Alan Wake 2 (Remedy Entertainment)
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios)
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (Insomniac Games)
  • Resident Evil 4 Remake (Capcom)
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Nintendo)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo)

Undoubtedly, every game on this list is astounding, but in a year so packed with high-quality releases, it’s strange to see a remake among the nominees.

Final Fantasy XVI, one of 2023’s most talked about and highly praised titles by both fans and critics alike, did not receive a nomination. Some are unhappy to see a remake taking a spot in the Game of the Year category with a year as momentous as 2023. This isn’t uncommon, with other remakes worming their way into the Game of the Year contention, including Resident Evil 2 Remake, calling into question whether the show needs a dedicated category for these releases.

Even more shocking is Resident Evil 4 winning awards in the medium over fresh titles, with RE4 Remake taking the PlayStation Game of the Year title for 2023 at the Golden Joystick Awards.

In our Final Fantasy XVI review, we called it a masterpiece that is a monumental step forward for the franchise.

Regardless of how we feel about the contestants this year, it’s sure to be an interesting and exciting show. To see who wins Game of the Year 2023, tune in to The Game Awards on December 7.
