It’s official! Nintendo has announced the next video game adaptation following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Legend of Zelda is coming to theaters, but this feature film has a crucial difference: it’s a live-action production. The title won’t come to theaters for some time, but the first details dropped on November 7, 2023.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the Representative Director of Nintendo, came forward to share the news via Nintendo’s Twitter Account. The Nintendo veteran shared he’s been hard at work on The Legend of Zelda’s live-action project “for many years” with Avi Arad, Chairman of Arad Productions Inc.
Nintendo’s official site shared even more info, such as the film’s financing plans. Nintendo will split the cost of the film with Sony, with theatrical distribution done by Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. Miyamoto is heavily involved in the Zelda production, as he was with the Mario movie released in early 2023.
For those unfamiliar, The Legend of Zelda follows the tale of the Princess of Hyrule, Zelda, and her knight, Link, who must fight the evil Ganon (or Ganondorf, depending on the entry) to free Hyrule from the forces of darkness.
The Legend of Zelda has seen great success in recent years, following the release of Breath of the Wild in 2017 and Tears of the Kingdom in 2023. Both titles saw critic and fan acclaim, with Breath of the Wild winning Game of the Year.
Though the games have never been more popular, fans are skeptical about the choice to make the title a live-action movie instead of animated like Mario’s feature film was. With so little information, it’s hard to judge the title. Only time will tell how this project turns out.
