‘Super Mario Bros.’ earns $204.6M in the US; $375.6 worldwide

Nintendo's crown jewel rises to the top of the box office.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ continues to break records and crush expectations. Nintendo and Illumination’s animated feature stood atop the box office this past weekend, and the earnings shocked even the highest projections.

According to The Hollywood Reporter. Super Mario Bros. beat out ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ to be the top film launch of 2023. On top of that, ‘Super Mario Bros.’ had the biggest opening for an animated movie, beating out Disney’s ‘Frozen 2,’ and the biggest five-day launch in history, finally taking the spot away from 2009’s ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.’ With $204.6M domestically and $375.6M globally, it was a momentous achievement for these video game icons.

Before the weekend began, Mario’s animated outing saw projections around $141M. Box office outings rarely overperform to this degree, which is likely because 60% of patrons were aged 18-34, far outside of the expected demographic.

Despite the mixed critic reception, audiences love the film, going in droves. With a 96% audience score and over 5,000 verified ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, and an A Cinema Score, it’s safe to say that the movie is a smash hit with Nintendo fans.

The movie has yet to debut in Japan, where the Italian plumber may be the most popular. Only time will tell, but the film will probably soar to the top of the box office after Mario hits the silver screen in Nintendo’s founding country on April 28.
